F! Archive: Swedish Open 2000

[editor’s note: it only seems right to start off the F! Archive with the earliest post we could find, covering the very first freestyle contest of this century. This is where the “freestyle revival” began – none of us would be here without this event. I should also add that Mattias Ösund made a return to freestyle for the 2017 World Championships in Stockholm, and he made another appearance in Brandenburg in 2022; you might know him as Mattias Dewoon.]

Sweden, a small country with long cold winters and midnight summer sun heralded in the New Millennium with its first freestyle contest of this new era. While the rest of the world has seemingly dropped the ball when it comes to promoting flatland freestyle skateboarding, Sweden refuses to let skateboarding forget its roots. As they did when they brought their worthy competitors to the U.S.A. and other countries in the 1980’s, they continue to keep the rest of the freestyle world on it’s toes, and trying to keep up with their aggressive freestyle skateboarding programs. From their recently awarded F-Magazine internet site, to their moments notice “Minute Men” competitors who are willing to go to any lengths to be “Johnny On The Spot”, the rest of us have a lot of work to do to equal their unwavering devotion and dedication. Until the rest of us are able to look ourselves in the mirror and say that we are doing our part, we will have to say Thank You to Sweden for now!
