WFSA Ranking 2024

2024 was a huge year for freestyle, with more events packed into the one calendar year than in any other since freestyle’s “rebirth” in the year 2000. China and Russia had their first ever recorded freestyle competitions, and the Netherlands came out of hibernation to host the Dutch Open back in March. Mixed pro-am events also saw a return in the form of the US Open and Canada’s Wet Coast Open, but noticeably absent from the contest circuit was the UK, who failed to hold a single event this year for the first time in almost a decade.

Amateur Division

The Amateur division was larger than it had ever been in 2024, running to a frankly ridiculous 149 competitors across all 18 events held globally in this calendar year. The Amateur rankings are topped by some very busy European skaters who all hit multiple contests in multiple locations, with Alex Foster placing consistently high to earn the top spot. Elsewhere in the top three, Jillis made a strong return to competitive skating after a long hiatus, and Paolo “Pillus” Demurtas snatches the final podium space in his last year before moving on to the Masters division for 2025.

Alex Foster - Slatina 2024
Alex Foster dealt with the very un-British heat in Slatina, Romania to take his first major international win en route to finishing the year in 1st place in the WFSA rankings.
Further down the list, Orson Merry scored highly with his first place win in the (huge!) US Open to be the top-ranked amateur in North America, but his relative lack of international travel held him back somewhat. Bryce Noe also had a strong year, winning the Thunderdome event in January and the World Round Up in May, but his decision to enter the small pro division in Slatina instead of staying in the Amateur division robbed him of a lot of valuable points that would have put him much higher up this list.

Pro Division

The Pro division was absolutely dominated by Japanese skaters this year, with both Ichinoshin and Ikkei picking up points in every event in their home country before travelling to Germany to take home a lot of valuable points from some high-rank finishes at World Freestyle. Harry Fisher from the UK also put in the miles – and a solid victory out in France – to finish second in his first full year in the pro division.

Ichinoshin Suzuki - World Freestyle 2024
Ichinoshin Suzuki came over to Brandenburg, flew around the place at top speed, and split-kicked his way to second place, gathering enough points to seal his top ranking for 2024.
Another point of note is the Lillis-and-Guenter pairing in 8th and 9th respectively, who continue to be neck-and-neck after all these years – and still competitive in the pro division against people less than half their ages.

Masters Division

The Masters division has grown impressively over the last few years; it used to be rare to see more than three people in the Masters division at any competition, but now we’re starting to see some respectable Masters events across Europe and Brazil.

AJ Kohn - Dutch Open 2024
AJ Kohn has historically been the man organising competitions, not the one competing in them. However, this year he stepped up his game and earned himself the top spot in the WFSA rankings.
AJ Kohn put in the work this year, travelling to multiple events in multiple countries and taking silver at each one, earning him the top spot in the rankings. Lynn Cooper picks up second place with a huge point haul from a second place finish at the US Open, showing that doing well at one huge event can really stand you in good stead for the yearly ranking. Christian Heise rounds out the podium on the back of wins in both the Netherlands and the World Round Up – but neither event had a big enough Masters division to get him in front of Lynn.

Women’s Division

If the Masters division has grown, the Women’s division has exploded – but there was only ever going to be one winner. Romania’s Carmen Ionita had a strong year, winning three of the six events she entered in 2024 – and not only did she place second in two of the other events, she also picked up a respectable 10th place in a mixed gender pro division in Japan. It’s no surprise that she became the first European woman to ever have a pro freestyle deck in 2024!

Carmen Ionita - Japan 2024
Carmen Ionita is not even out of high school yet and she’s already earned herself a pro model, become a world champion, and topped the WFSA rankings – all in one year!
Romania’s other female wunderkind, Rhiana Grigore, took first place at both Paderborn and the Dutch open, but her lack of attendance at World Freestyle kept her out of the second-place spot in the rankings; instead, that spot is taken by Cheyenne Williams, who not only placed decently at the Wet Coast Open in her home nation of Canada, but took home a ludicrous amount of points from her 7th place finish in the mixed-gender US Open, beating seasoned freestylers like Bert Mathieson and Daniel Trujillo in the process.

Another strong contender in the Women’s division is Japan’s Kai Tanabe, who won one contest in Japan and placed decently in two more. If she’d had the opportunity to travel to some of the big contests in Europe and North America, she may well have taken the whole division!
